| Fitzroy Shire is located to the West of Rockhampton and stretches both North and South of Rockhampton. The shire is approximately 8,400 km2 (The extremities are approximately 140 km. from North to South and 60 km. from East to West). River plains bound Fitzroy Shire to the south near Port Alma, the DEE and Boomer Ranges to the west and the Fitzroy River to the east and north. Much of the shire is slightly undulating. The major population centre is Gracemere, however other townships include Bouldercombe, Bajool and Marmor in the south, Gogango, Westwood, Kalapa, Stanwell, and Kabra in the west and Alton Downs and Ridgelands in the Northwest. |
The climate in both Rockhampton and Fitzroy Shire is sub tropical, with an average rainfall of 858 mm with maximum temperatures are 23oC in winter and 31oC in summer. The population in Rockhampton is about 65,000 and Fitzroy Shire is about 12,000.
The major natural threats to Rockhampton and Fitzroy Shire are Cyclone, Storms, Floods, Bushfire and Earthquake.
The State Emergency Service (SES) is a state-wide voluntary organisation with units established by each Local Government, supported by State and Commonwealth Governments and supported by a team of permanent staff under the Director SES.
The SES units are made up by members of the community who are prepared to make a commitment in preparing themselves and donating their time to assist other members of their community who have been adversely affected by disaster.
